A Traveler's Guide to Attending Traditional Nepali Weddings

A traditional Nepalese wedding is a multi-day spectacle of color, music, and sacred rites. From Hindu ceremonies in the hills to Newari 'Ihi' rituals, weddings represent the coming together of families and communities.

For a traveler attending for the first time, the scale can be overwhelming. The celebration begins with the arrival of the groom's procession (Janti), accompanied by a brass band. Guests from the bride's side welcome them with garlands of marigolds (Sayapatri).

The central ritual takes place under a canopy (Jagya), where the bride and groom exchange garlands of Dubo grass and walk around a sacred fire. The red vermillion powder (Sindoor) is then applied to the bride's hair, symbolizing her new status.

Respectful participation involves wearing bright colors (avoiding pure white or black, which represent mourning), accepting the red tikka mark on the forehead, and participating in the communal dances (Lok Dohori) that extend late into the night.
