About this experience

Join our family in our 300-year-old traditional Newari home for an authentic Samay Baji feast. You will learn about Newari hospitality, taste 12 different traditional elements including beaten rice, buffalo meat (choila), spiced potato (alu tama), and local rice beer (aila). We will sit on straw mats (sukul) and eat from leaf plates (laptya) in the traditional style.

Welcome & Traditional Home Tour

Meet Rajan's family in the courtyard, receive a traditional red tikka blessing, and tour our 300-year-old Newari brick home.

12:30 PM

Introduction to Samay Baji

A short kitchen walkthrough where we explain the 12 separate elements that make up the sacred Samay Baji plate, from beaten rice to black soy beans.

1:00 PM

The Feast & Local Aila Beer pouring

Sit on traditional straw sukul mats. We will serve you on hand-pressed leaf plates (laptya) and demonstrate the traditional high-pour of local rice beer (aila) from a brass pitcher.

2:30 PM

Sweet Milk Tea & Storytelling

Wind down with spiced milk tea (Chiya), take photos wearing traditional Bhadgaunle Topi (caps), and discuss Bhaktapur's rich history.
